Bring your family and join Foss Waterway Seaport for GREAT SUMMER FUN!

Wednesday, June 25 - "Whoopee! It's Wednesday!"
Wow, what kind of creature is that?

So Mr. Scuba Diver, what do you see when you're under the water? Today's "Whoopee" will answer this question with a real life underwater exploration and marine life collection. Join us on the Seaport's docks for two hours with diver, Tarin Todd. Tarin will start with a demonstration of how to put on his diving attire ...Now what is that for, Tarin? He will then descend into the depths of the Thea Foss Waterway in search of marine life, which he will bring to the surface. What fun to touch a sea star, a crab and so much more! Don't miss all the cool FACTS Seaport staff will share, as they talk about the marine life collected and listen to Tarin share his experiences while underwater. We will offer time for "belly biology" on the dock as part of this program! You will also have an opportunity to view the Seaport's new scuba exhibit on display for the summer.

Wednesday, August 20"Whoopee! It's Wednesday!"
"Wow, look at that Truss!"

A truss is a structure comprising one or more triangular units constructed with straight members whose ends are connected at joints called nodes. The Seaport is located in the historic Balfour Dock building and has one the best examples of a "truss" system. Come examine our truss system, analyze it from every angle and then test your skills by building your very own "truss" bridge. Once finished, we will give you all the tools you will need to give your bridge a stress test to see how strong it really is.

Trusses, like all structures, are designed by civil engineers with special expertise in structural analysis and design. These men and women are called structural engineers. When our building was designed in the late 1800s anyone who built anything of any magnitude would have had to use a slide rule. The slide rule was the only technological tool widely and continuously used for over three centuries. Not many know how to use a slide rule these days. As part of this "Whoopee!" we will teach you how to use a slide rule...using our "giant" model. It's a challenge you won't want to miss!

TIME: Noon to 2:00 PM
COST: $20 for one adult and put to three children, ages 7 and above
This event is limited to 20 children.

August 23 & 24 (normal Museum hours) - All About Steam Weekend

This weekend event will feature the Seaport's wonderful "steam" exhibit and is geared to area families and steam enthusiasts. We are thrilled to welcome back the Northwest Steam Society who will bring a collection of their steamers to moor at the Seaport's dock. The boat owners plan to share their steamers with Museum guests, demo and explain how they work, plus answer all your questions. They will provide plenty of steam whistle sounds to support this event and will be sure to attract the curious. If you have never seen these delightful boats, now is the time to come to the Seaport...they are amazing! The group plans to race their boats on the Thea Foss Waterway (time TBA) and take a select few of our guests out for a short cruise (details coming).

For the younger generations, plan to purchase a steamboat kit...build it and race it in our large pond located in the Seaport's parking lot. We will have many steam activities for kids of all ages...great fun!
