In 2013 the Seaport will offer TWO Summer Science SeaCamps:

Session I – Summer Science + Art SeaCamp – grades 5, 6
July 15-18, 2013 – 9 AM to 3:30 PM

Session II – Summer Science SeaCamp – grades 7, 8 or 9
August 5-9, 2013 – 9 AM to 4:00 PM

CAMP DESCRIPTIONS:

NEW - Summer Science + Art 4-day SeaCamp – Session I: "My Eyes are on You!" - Pollution in a Working Waterfront

The Seaport's Summer SeaCamp "My Eyes are on You!" combines science with art allowing campers going into 5th or 6th grade to experience interdisciplinary activities that embrace creative thinking, GIS mapping, scientific field investigations, photography and creative art projects. Campers will explore environmental issues associated with Tacoma’s working waterfront in ways they've never experienced before. Students will discover that scientists and artists think very much alike!

This science + art camp will allow campers the opportunity to examine storm drains, marine debris, water pollution, color, light, and so much more as they learn to visually capture their findings with cameras provided. The grand finale will be a visual presentation based around photographs taken in the field offering insight into the impact we all have on our local environment - both the good and the bad! Photographs taken during the camp will be a key feature in the Seaport's newest exhibit a full size model of a Twin 96er...which campers will help build.

The Seaport has funds available to pay for two $170 scholarships which will cover the registration for two campers. To apply for a scholarship, please fill out this application and email it to jan [dot] adams [at] fosswaterwayseaport [dot] org (Jan Adams)

Campers will participate in the following activities:

  • Perform scientific field experiments at select locations on Tacoma’s waterfront with one day on a boat.
  • Produce trash art, help construct a full size Twin 96er model to be exhibited at the Museum + other environmentally related art projects...some you can even eat!
  • Participate in a daily "photo challenge."  Final photos will be exhibited in our newest exhibit a full size Twin 96er.
  • Experience the process of publishing personal photographs and learn why photographs are a important part of science.
  • Learn GPS/GIS mapping skills via a "geocaching" treasure hunt.

Summer Science SeaCamp – Sessions II: Watershed Mysteries from the Rivers to the Sea!

The Seaport’s Summer Science SeaCamps, part of our Science on the Sea Program, foster a passion for learning and a deep appreciation for the natural environment. Our 2013 SeaCamp for grades 7, 8 or 9 has the theme “Watershed Mysteries from the Rivers to the Sea!" Campers will be challenged to solve a "mystery" each day as they explore local watersheds to understand how their actions affect the environment and how to make positive changes to help preserve our region’s marine ecology. Two days will be spent on a boat.

This summer's program will give campers a chance to investigate local marine life up close and personal.  Campers will observe live "critters" found in the Seaport's instructional touch tanks, then build working models to illustrate the functionality of unique features in select creatures. From there we will take trips to the beach, on a boat and to a creek to round out the learning experience.

This SeaCamp offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that embraces creative thinking, provides hands-on field science activities, and engages participants in critical-thinking and problem solving to address real world issues – a week full of thrilling experiences!

Campers will participate in the following activities:

  • Learn about marine organisms and ecosystem dynamics; ocean currents, waves
  • Collect water quality samples and data for research
  • Conduct plankton and microplastic tows
  • Explore hands-on field investigations
  • Learn to plot GPS/GIS mapping
  • Perform scientific “pollution” experiments

The Seaport’s 2013 Summer Science SeaCamp reaches students in a new way, bringing science to life with land-based activities at the Seaport, boat-based trips and bus outings to local streams and various environmental restoration and monitoring sites. SeaCamps foster a personal connection with marine life so that students become environmental stewards, take better care of their natural habitat, and learn about the scientific process.
