SeaCamps - 2014

Foss Waterway Seaport Image

Our 2014 Summer Science SeaCamps for grades 5 – 9 offer boat-based education, field studies, science + art activities, creative problem solving…science as never experienced before!

In 2014 the Seaport will offer TWO Summer Science SeaCamps:

The Seaport’s 2014 Summer Science SeaCamps reaches students in a new way, bringing science to life with land-based activities at the Seaport, boat-based trips and bus outings to local streams and various environmental restoration and monitoring sites. SeaCamps foster a personal connection with marine life so that students become environmental stewards, take better care of their natural habitat, and learn about the scientific process.

Session I – Summer Science SeaCamp – grades 7, 8 and 9
August 4-8, 2014 – 9 AM to 4:00 PM, $195 - ONLY TWO SPOTS LEFT!

Session II – Summer Science SeaCamp – grades 5 and 6

CAMP DESCRIPTIONS:

Session I:

The Seaport’s Summer Science SeaCamp Session I, part of our Science on the Sea Program, fosters a passion for learning and a deep appreciation for the natural environment. Our 2014 SeaCamp for grades 7, 8 and 9 has the theme “Watershed Field Investigations – Using Outdoor Environments to Answer Mysterious Questions.” Campers will be challenged to solve a "problem" of their own creation each day as they explore local watersheds to understand how their actions affect the environment and how to make positive changes to help preserve our region’s marine ecology. Two days will be spent on a boat, one day on our science research boat, and one day in a kayak collecting data in the Thea Foss Waterway.

This SeaCamp offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that embraces creative thinking, provides hands-on field science activities, and engages participants in critical-thinking and problem solving to address real world issues – a week full of thrilling and unusual experiences!

Campers will participate in the following activities:

  • Explore hands-on field investigations
  • Collect water quality samples and data for research
  • Conduct plankton tows
  • Learn to plot GPS/GIS mapping
  • Perform scientific “pollution” experiments
  • Learn about marine organisms and ecosystem dynamics, ocean currents, waves
  • Turn science results into art…pure magic

Session II:

The Seaport's Summer Science SeaCamp Session II is titled "I’m a Marine Biologist and My Eyes are on YOU!" This camp, perfect for students going into 5th or 6th grade, will be four days full of experiences based around marine life located in Puget Sound. We will start the camp with a low tide beach study observing, touching and appreciating the diversity of marine life

This camp will give campers a chance to investigate local marine life up close and personal. After observing live "critters" both in their nature setting and found in the Seaport's instructional touch tanks, they will build working models to illustrate the functionality of unique features in select creatures. We will offer trips to the beach, on a boat, and to a creek to round out the learning experience.

Campers will participate in the following activities:

  • Study marine life in their natural settings
  • Build working models of some of marine “critters”
  • Conduct experiments to understand how mussels can be natural pollution cleaners
  • Explore hands-on field investigations
  • Discover the difference between plankton and macro invertebrates
  • Eat foods from the sea
  • Explore marine food webs
