Discover how our Summer Science SeaCamp for grades 5 – 9 bring students a new perspective through inquiry-based learning and discovery on land and on water!
In 2012 the Seaport will offer THREE Summer Science SeaCamps:
Session I – Summer Science + Art SeaCamp – grades 5, 6
July 9-12, 2012 – 9 AM to 3:30 PM
Session II* – Summer Science SeaCamp – grades 7, 8 or 9
July 23-27, 2012 – 9 AM to 4:00 PM
Session III* – Summer Science SeaCamp – grades 7, 8 or 9
July 31-August 3, 2012 – 9 AM to 4:00 PM
*NOTE: Session II and Session III cover the same curricula. Campers in grades 7, 8 or 9 should choose between Session II (July 23-27, 2012) or Session III (July 31-August 3, 2012) when registering for Summer Science SeaCamp.
CAMP DESCRIPTIONS:
NEW - Summer Science + Art 4-day SeaCamp – Session I: My Eyes are on You!
The Seaport's
This science + art camp will allow campers the opportunity to examine storm drains, marine debris, water pollution and so much more. Students will learn to visually capture their findings with cameras provided. The grand finale, a visual presentation based around photographs taken in the field offering insight into the impact we all have on our local environment - both the good and the bad!
Campers will participate in the following activities:
- Perform scientific field experiments at select locations on Tacoma’s waterfront
- Produce trash art + other environmentally related art projects
- Participate in a daily "photo challenge"
- Experience the process of publishing personal photographs
- Learn GPS/GIS mapping skills via a "geocaching" treasure hunt
Summer Science SeaCamp – Sessions II and III: Watersheds Alive from the Rivers to the Sea!
The Seaport’s Summer Science SeaCamps, part of our Science on the Sea Program, foster a passion for learning and a deep appreciation for the natural environment. Our 2012 SeaCamp for grades 7, 8 or 9 has the theme “Watersheds Alive from the Rivers to the Sea!” Participants will explore environmental issues on Tacoma's working waterfront, the Puyallup River watershed and Puget Sound to understand how their actions affect the environment and how to make positive changes to help preserve our region’s marine ecology.
SeaCamps offer an interdisciplinary curriculum that embraces creative thinking, provides hands-on field science activities, and engages participants in critical-thinking and problem solving to address real world issues – a week full of thrilling experiences!
Campers will participate in the following activities:
- Perform scientific “pollution” experiments
- Collect water quality samples and data for research
- Conduct plankton and microplastic tows
- Explore hands-on field investigations
- Learn to plot GPS/GIS mapping
The Seaport’s 2012 Summer Science SeaCamp reaches students in a new way, bringing science to life with land-based activities at the Seaport and day trips by boat and bus to various environmental restoration and monitoring sites. SeaCamps foster a personal connection with marine life so that students become environmental stewards, take better care of their natural habitat, and learn about the scientific process.
