SeaCamps - 2016

Foss Waterway Seaport Image

Our 2016 Summer Science SeaCamps for grades 5 – 9 offer boat-based education, field studies, science + art activities, creative problem solving…science as never experienced before!

In 2016 the Seaport will offer TWO Summer Science SeaCamps:

The Seaport’s 2016 Summer Science SeaCamps will reach students in a new way, bringing science to life with land-based activities at the Seaport, boat-based trips and bus outings to local beaches and various environmental restoration and monitoring sites. SeaCamps foster a personal connection with marine life so that students become environmental stewards, take better care of their natural habitat, and learn about the scientific process.

Session I – Summer Science SeaCamp – grades 5 and 6
July 25-28, 2016 – 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, $170

Session II – Summer Science SeaCamp – grades 7, 8, 9
August 1-5, 2016 – 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, $195

Session I:

The Foss Waterway Seaport has available for 2016 one fully funded Session I SeaCamp scholarship (scholarship a $170 value). All scholarships for this camp have been awarded.

Session I:

The Seaport’s Summer Science SeaCamp Session I, all new this year, will explore Systems of the Ocean. This STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) camp, perfect for students going into 5th or 6th grade, will explore the following systems: ocean chemistry, ocean energy, fresh to salt water dynamics, and what fun...interruptor to a system. Boat and land days will include exploration, scientific research and creative problem solving. We will explore the underwater world using the Seaport's ROV units (remotely operated vehicles).

This SeaCamp offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that embraces field science activities and engages participants in critical-thinking to address real world issues – four days full of thrilling and unusual experiences!

Campers will participate in the following activities:

  • Explore hands-on field investigations
  • Collect water samples to explore the world of water chemistry
  • Conduct plankton tows
  • Drive an ROV
  • Perform scientific “pollution” experiments with a whole new twist
  • Enjoy edible science experiments
  • Turn science results into art…pure magic

Session II:

The Foss Waterway Seaport has available for 2016 one fully funded Session II SeaCamp scholarship (scholarship a $195 value). NOTE - All scholarships for this camp have been awarded.

The Seaport's Summer Science SeaCamp Session II is titled "Marine Biology - Plankton to Whales." This camp, perfect for students going into 7, 8, or 9th grade, will be a week full of experiences based around marine life located in Puget Sound. We will have low tides all week long - great for beach studies that will include observing and appreciating the diversity of local Puget Sound habitats.

This camp will give campers a chance to investigate local marine life up close and personal both in their natural settings and in the Seaport's instructional touch tanks. On our boat days, campers will be able to talk to divers during in a live dive component as the divers explore the world below our research vessel. The divers will collect samples for campers to study and identify.

Campers will participate in the following activities:

  • Study marine life in their natural settings
  • Build working models of some marine “critters”
  • Conduct experiments to understand how mussels can be natural pollution cleaners
  • Participate in fish and squid dissections and learn from marine biologists as they perform a necropsy
  • Discover the difference types of plankton
  • Eat foods from the sea and make an edible beach illustrating zonation
